Hello Gautam,
I hope this email finds you well. I had emailed you last week
concerning the kickoff of Vault’s Consulting Rankings rollout. Today,
as part of that rollout, Vault has announced its Top 50 Most
Prestigious Consulting Firms for 2011.
The rankings reflect what over 4,500 consulting insiders really think
about their competitors. I’d like to gauge your interest in writing a
story about the rankings — or including the rankings as part of an
overall trend story.
Here are a few headlines:

  * McKinsey & Company ranks No. 1 for the 9th straight year.
* Top 10 remains unchanged despite slight adjustments in positioning.
* A.T. Kearney, ZS Associates, and Diamond Management & Technology
Consultants make big jumps in rankings.
The Consulting Rankings rollout continues next week as Vault releases
its 2011 Consulting Practice Area Rankings and concludes on September
14, 2010 with the release of the 2011 Consulting Quality of Life
Rankings.
Vault editors will be available to discuss the rankings and their
impact on the consulting industry. I’ll call to follow up. In the
meantime, please let me know if you have questions.
Thank you,
Jon Minners
[cid:image001.png@01CB48FC.1625DE10]
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VAULT.COM ANNOUNCES TOP 50 MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONSULTING FIRMS FOR 2011

MCKINSEY TAKES TOP SPOT FOR 9TH STRAIGHT YEAR; A.T. KEARNEY, ZS
ASSOCIATES, DIAMOND MANAGEMENT & TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANTS MAKE BIG JUMPS

New York, NY, (August 31, 2010) Vault.com, the source of ratings,
rankings and insight for the consulting industry, has released its
annual Top 50 Consulting Prestige Rankings. For the ninth straight
year, McKinsey & Company, regarded by consultants as “the gold
standard,” has been ranked No. 1.
The Vault Consulting Prestige Rankings provide a comprehensive roadmap
of who’s who in the consulting industry—ranging from big consulting
shops to smaller, niche firms, and spanning a vast swath of
industries. From March through July, over 4,500 consultants of all
levels were asked to rate consulting firms on a scale of 1 to 10 based
on prestige. (They were unable to rate their own firm, and were asked
to rate only firms with which they were familiar).
The 2011 Top 10 Most Prestigious Consulting Firms are:

1. McKinsey & Company
2. The Boston Consulting Group
3. Bain & Company
4. Booz & Company
5. Deloitte Consulting
6. Mercer LLC
7. Monitor Group
8. PricewaterhouseCoopers
9. Ernst & Young
10. Oliver Wyman

“McKinsey & Company cannot be beat in the prestige category,” said
Brian Dalton, managing editor at Vault.com. “The firm has achieved a
certain mystique that has gone unmatched since we began conducting our
consulting survey, so much so that respondents go so far as to state
that McKinsey has ‘invented the industry.’”
Survey respondents call the consulting juggernaut a “powerhouse,” “the
name for strategy,” “the best of the best,” an “industry leader” and a
“founding father.” But while the firm might be the “gold standard,”
prestige comes with a price and detractors are quick to criticize
McKinsey for being “arrogant, overpriced and very junior,”
“disconnected,” “pretentious,” “egotistical,” and “not invincible.”
But that has not stopped jobseekers from wanting to work at McKinsey.
As one associate at McKinsey notes, “although I do occasionally feel
overworked, I cannot imagine a more interesting place to work or a
better set of folks to work with.” Another associate describes
McKinsey as “a great group of very smart and motivated people who are
good at working in team settings. People here work hard together and
develop strong bonds.”
Much in line with McKinsey’s repeat at the top, this year’s prestige
ranking showed a remarkably low rate of movement from last year. The
Top 10 firms are entirely the same, with some slight adjustments in
positioning, as HR consulting firm Mercer LLC moved up two spots,
while Monitor Group and PricewaterhouseCoopers each moved down one
notch.
Rankings See Big Increases From Several Firms In Wake of Recession;
Welcome New Additions
Among the firms that made larger jumps in the rankings are A.T.
Kearney, which jumped from No. 16 last year to No. 11; ZS Associates,
which rose from No. 28 in the 2010 rankings to No. 21 for 2011; and
Diamond Management & Technology Consultants, which jumped five spots
from No. 36 last year to No. 31.
“These jumps suggest that the factors that improved firms’ perception
in the industry are stability in the face of the recession and
targeted industry focus,” added Mr. Dalton. “For instance, strategic
IT consulting is on the rise as companies seek to streamline their
processes and cut down on back-office costs, and health care
consulting will continue to play an integral role as the new
legislation continues to unfold.”
This year’s rankings also saw new firms enter into the mix this year.
Grant Thornton (No. 28) is a large, well-known accounting/consulting
shop, while The Cambridge Group (No. 35) has made a name for itself in
the growth strategy space, focusing on customer demand.
View the entire Top 50 Consulting Prestige
Rankings.
About Vault
Vault.com is the source of employer and university rankings, ratings
and insight for highly credentialed, in-demand candidates.
You must be aware of the pioneering work beig done in the Himalagion and at Leh by PRAGYA (www.pragya.org), a not-for-profit organisation started by Gargi and Sunil Pillai. The on the ground situation is truly bleak after the recent natural calamity. To give you an idea, a migrant worker camp in Phyang village (one of the places where PRAGYA delivers education and health services) had 250 inmates, of which only 104 have survived. Several villages have been destroyed and many families have lost everything – houses, crops, belongings – and half their members as well.

PRAGYA has taken up rescue and relief operations through its field office in Leh. Pragya Leh staff and members from Gurgaon / other offices have put together a volunteer team that is carrying out rescue and evacuation of survivors to hospitals in the area, and supply of essentials (medicines, blankets, food, hygiene kits, etc.). There is e normous work to be done for reconstruction and helping the people of Leh get back on their feet.

They could do with additional help from every quarter.

Contributions could be in cash and kind. They have a list of relief requirements for the immediate relief (essential supplies)- but those who would want to contribute in kind would need to check the need status on the day of contribution.

Contributions in cash could be be to following account:

Account name: Pragya R
Account no.: 002105000370
Bank: ICICI Bank Ltd.
(The above account is valid only for in-country contributions)

The Pragya Leh Relief Team is being coordinated by Nimisha Srivastava (office: 0124-4574518, mobile: 9213136468), and those interested in helping may contact
her. In case, you are not able to get through, please do drop me a mail.

Geeta Bose of Kern – a learning solutions firm interviewed me recently for Lionsher.com the “learning den” for Learning and Development professionals and focused on asking me Is social media hype or reality? and the way it can add to the learning process.

An avid blogger, a twitter-addict, with 1000 friends on Orkut and an enviable fan following on Facebook, Gautam is a social media and network junkie. But when asked how he’d like to categorize himself, Gautam Ghosh says, “my foremost identity is as an HR professional.” Those who know Gautam describe him as the “Face of HR blogging” in India as well as the global community. This young man has successfully connected the dots between HR, learning and social media. He believes that “learning happens by doing and sharing!”

Gautam has rich experience in the corporate world through his journey as an HR professional in organizations like DELL, Deloitte, HP, Satyam, as an independent OD and Training consultant as well as a consultant with 2020 Social. “I see everything kind of fitting into a larger umbrella of saying how do we make a more human organization,” he explains. By ‘human’ he refers to an organization that is open and transparent. Gautam believes that all his L&D work, HR professional work, HR journalist work, and his social media work belongs to the larger umbrella of building an organization that is more open, transparent and human. “While it wasn’t really obvious when I started off the journey but now when I look back, that’s one thread that has continued throughout the journey,” he adds thoughtfully.

The best part is that the folks at Lionsher.com went over what I said and made some models which explain beautifully better than my words

What is basically does is link all your social network contacts and email contacts together – so before you send a mail to the person you can see what’s on his/her mind on Twitter/Facebook/Linkedin or blog. See What is Gist

Another resource is Rapportive.com – a Chrome and Firefox extension unfortunately only for Gmail and Google Apps mails which let you see when you are mailing someone his social network details and status updates. See the review on Web Worker Daily.

Of course, if you are a MS Outlook user – you only need to install the Xobni plug-in – and when you see a mail you can see the recipients and the mails you have exchanged and his/her social network information – and Hoovers information is he/she is on a company email account.

I was approached by a journalist to answer some questions on a story
her publication is doing on Social Media – here are the questions and
my answers

Q. As social media consultant where do you see the loopholes of a
company’s social media marketing?

a. The biggest loophole is that managers think that social media
is like other media. It’s not. It is a place where users feel the need
to express and comment and create. If brands only focus on
“broadcasting” instead of giving people a platform to create and
connect they won’t enthuse the user.

Q What is the social media strategy that a company needs to adopt?

a. Focus on building a community of enthusiasts and evangelists
about their passions, lifestyle or causes. Don’t make Facebook and
Twitter as the fulcrum. Use them to find people who are your
evangelists and encourage them to engage with other users on your
platform

b. Organizations will need to realize that they need to do two
things that they don’t have currently the skills for – to become
content and community stewards

Q. How does one measure the social media activities and the result?

a. There are three metrics that one can track

i. Engagement metrics on the platform

ii. Web metrics

iii. Business metrics – focused on how many people tried or bought the product.

Q. H ow do you think social media is helping the small businesses,
like those who are advertising and marketing their services only
through social media?

A. There are some kind of small businesses like Cafes, restaurants,
bookshops, art galleries which are ideal for social media as their
products and services can have dedicated fans – who engage with it on
social media outlets. Such businesses can incentivise fans to talk
about them on the social web and reward them for such evangelism.

However, for small businesses that are into B2B marketplaces, like
recruiting agencies (e.g. http://blog.optionsindia.com/ ) it is a
vehicle to build awareness and connect with customers – and also for
Search Engine Optimisation.

Q. do you think having a strong fan following and creating a number of
fan pages are giving these business a boost and scope to flourish?

A. In the US it has been researched that the value of a fan is much
higher than an ordinary customer – so yes if a business displays
engagement with its fans and helps its fans to connect with each other
- it stands to benefit from the goodwill

Q. what is your projection for small businesses who runs only through
social media, says.. 2-3 years down the line.

A. I see social media – specially location based services like
Foursquare and Gowalla – becoming critical to these businesses as it
shows who’s visiting them and are willing to talk about them – such
regulars (“mayors” on foursquare for example) will be key to drive
brand messages by empowering them to talk about the business.

In the future I see value being co-created in the space between the
fan and the businesses, with innovation and ideas for new services and
products being given by these fans.

Co-working provides a single solution to multiple organizational problems: the space demands of flexible, multi-geographical workforces; the costs of permanent offices; the potential inconvenience of working at home (especially for employees with children); the inexperience that many employees have with alliances and joint ventures (which are natural outgrowths of shared space); the carbon footprint inherent in a commuting population; and the sheer waste of time, resources, human capability, and energy spent moving people back and forth across a metropolitan area, only to have them on the phone or reading e-mail most of the day.

For example, at the Hat Factory, a co-working space in San Francisco, two of the tenants are programmers working for Intalio, a business process management software company based 50 miles (80 kilometers) away in Palo Alto. These programmers commute to the Palo Alto office only a couple of days per week. They say their supervisor approves of the arrangement because they accomplish more work on their Hat Factory days than on days when they spend two and a half hours in the car.

Co-working spaces attract young, resourceful employees. The spaces fill up rapidly with people in their 20s and 30s, often those employed in technological fields (Web development, graphic design, social media, videography, blogging) or as writers, attorneys, or management consultants. Rather than cubicles or closed-off rooms, the work spaces tend to favor open desk arrangements that encourage cross-communication and collaboration. In some spaces, workers nest in preferred corners; in others, they switch locations, views, and office mates regularly.

A couple of co-working spaces were set up as experiments in reshaping corporate climates. For example, the Steelcase furniture company opened Workspring in Chicago, which it describes as “a network of extraordinary spaces, designed to inspire and support creative collaboration, productive retreat, and transformative exchange.” The company applies the insights gleaned from space renters to its own next-generation furniture designs. “The trend [in facilities] is for corporations to reduce their fixed real estate costs,” says Steelcase Senior Vice President Mark Greiner, the general manager of Workspring, explaining the reasoning behind this venture. “I was seeing a shift toward elements that weren’t necessarily playing toward our strengths.”

Meanwhile, spending on more traditional tools like job boards and third-party recruiters either decreased or stayed constant for a majority of companies.

Not surprisingly, the social networking site most used by companies for recruiting is LinkedIn (78%) , followed by Facebook (55%). The site that saw the most growth was Twitter, which wasn’t even a blip on the radar when Jobvite first conducted this survey in 2008, but was used by 45% of respondents this year.

Most hiring firms will review a candidate’s social media presence as part of the vetting process, with 38% indicating that they always search for applicants’ social networking profiles and 32% doing so only sometimes.

Indicating that the social media’s involvement in job recruiting is more than just hype, the survey reported that 58% of companies had successfully hired employees via a social networking site.

The complete results of the survey are available on Jobvite’s website (free registration required to download).
