Forget job fairs and spamming potential employers with your résumé. If you’re looking for a new job, networking should be your primary job search strategy, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by Challenger, Gray and Christmas.

Well, job search is a complex process and this might hold true in certain industries and geographies. However, don’t rule out the third party recruiter as well as the much maligned job board as a tool for your job search.

A mix of all the approaches listed on the site is advocated, dependent on your level and experience.

For example for a recent graduate a job fair might be better to secure a job than a newspaper ad, sending unsolicited resumes or applying via the careers website. (oh, by the way, most companies’ careers sites are ‘black holes’ where resumes vanish! More on that later!), whereas, for a senior person networking might be a better option.
