Linkedin to limit number of groups you can be a member of


Apparently if you belong to more than 50 or more groups on Linkedin you might have received an email like this.

Users will be limited to 50 groups that they can belong to.

We are also at this time making some changes to the user-created groups we host. These changes include adding a limit to the number of user-created groups any LinkedIn member may be part of at one time. Currently we are setting that limit at membership in 50 (fifty) user-created groups.

You are currently a member of xx groups. Please take the time before this limit goes into place on August 14, 2008, to choose which groups you would like to maintain. To remove yourself from a group, go to the My Groups page and click the word “Settings” next to the group you wish to leave. At the bottom of the settings page click the text “Leave this group.”

So Linkedin apparently has decided to clamp down on the number of groups. I guess because they were finding that being a member of many groups made people connect with others in the group without using Linkedin’s ridiculously priced inmail service – and also to opt out of Premium membership.

  3. The problem with the limit as I see it is that its being put into place after the fact with an arbitrary limit (Facebook has a limit of 200, but they have always had that). What happens in the future, if next week someone decides the ideal limit should be 20 or 2?

    Secondly, it goes against the whole consumer generated media thing where we the users are creating, voting and deciding with our behavior.

    So there are two reasons against the limit. I have my reasons for being in more groups. Basically for SEO and for a wider search capability etc. Just don’t see a valid reason for having fewer groups at this point. If a good reason was made clear I might be for it?

  5. Interesting that LinkedIn’s FAQ page on LinkedIn Groups says:
    How many groups can I join?
    You can join as many groups as you belong to. We anticipate that the average user of LinkedIn probably belongs to at least 3 to 4 groups that are meaningful to their professional life. :)

  6. No matter what Linkedin does, SalesCONx (with an emphasis on the word CON charges you for each connection. Connections have more value than any joined group. Stay away from SalesCONx. No value at all.

  8. I understand why they are limiting the amount of groups everyone can join (profit!), but I don’t agree with it. I know many users like Bill G who are part of a number of groups and it’ll take everyone a long time to sort through and remove them all. I think it’ll definitely discourage its current members.

    I’m a marketing manager for a website similar to LinkedIn called Salesconx. We’re an online marketplace for business referrals. Instead of just adding professionals to a virtual network (and paying to get better access to the site) like LinkedIn, Salesconx allows its members to browse through the marketplace, ask questions, and then purchase or sell powerful introductions. We’re a lot less complicated than LinkedIn and business is always happening on our site. Give it a shot and let me know if you find it useful.

  9. I am baffled by LinkedIn’s recent and almost immediate decision to cap the number of groups one can join and force us to flee the groups we have already joined. I emailed the LinkedIn folks to request that they take additional time to revisit this decision and/or increase the number of groups one may join. I would be most pleased if they grandfathered us into the previous policy which had no limit.

    Change is hard especially when it is forced. There are a hundred different ways to achieve this same goal (though they haven’t articulated their motivation) without alienating your strongest and most loyal fans. Why crack the foundation? If their ultimate goal is to raise more money (http://venturebeat.com/2008/08/04/linkedin-like-facebook-is-letting-employees-sell-some-stock-early/), they should figure out how to attach value to their revenue streams without alienating their biggest evangelists.

    Web 2.0 is about applying technology to the way human beings connect, collaborate, converse, and contribute. The best parts of it include organic growth from bottom to top. This top down drastic move by LinkedIn is counter to that which made it successful. When users are handed an ultimatum with little time to implement you ensure that they are left with a bad taste in their mouths. BTW, thanks to these same technologies they can broadcast their distaste pretty loudly.

    LinkedIn has demonstrated with this policy that although they have the technology to execute Web 2.0 they do not have the appreciation of the ways that people actually bond. Instead of hiring engineers and developers, they should be hiring Sociologists & Social Scientists because clearly they don’t understand the “social” aspects of Web 2.0.

    LI fails to appreciate that at its core, a group is a tribe. Some times tribes are active and sometimes they are waiting to be engaged either way they reflect certain aspects of our identity. The many groups I joined were to express an interest and reveal myself as the multidimensional person I am. I purposely hid the bulk of my groups because I didn’t want to over share on my profile. Most people on the site do the same thing. Being able to identify from LI profiles these hidden common social denominators makes all the difference. If both parties can learn, they cheer for the same baseball team, use the same PDA, support the same cause, and plan to attend the same conference, they enjoy richer conversations. Why, because both parties revealed something about who they were at an appropriate juncture.

    My online time over the last eight years has always been invested in the sites that empathize with the science of how human beings struggle to interact. Word of mouth and Web 2.0 technologies make social networking sites strong and if they aren’t carefully considering the needs of their users, they could bring about their own demise. If LinkedIn doesn’t course correct soon, I’ll being forced to reevaluate the VALUE that I derive from logging on to the site each day. Interestingly enough at the same time Seth Godin has launched a new social network at TriIibes.com. Whoever kills my pain best at the time gets my online time. Anyone remember Friendster???

  10. It took me over 2 months to join the 350 groups that I belong to. I have cultivated many business relationships because of these groups. It will take me FOREVER to remove 300 groups, one at a time.

    Linkedin has pissed me off. I called them and the operator would not connect me to customer service.

    I urge every Linkedin member to call them at this number:
    (650) 687-3600 and complain about the 50 group minimum.
